Vakuum Remixes

Munich-based experimental electronic/ambient artist Brnjsmin aka Giovanni Raabe follows his second studio album Büro of Music with a release that distils his working ethos: an LP-sized collection of remixes of his Vakuum EP, assembled from an eclectic cast of tourmates, fellow theatre musicians, and DJ guests. The record revisits and extends Brnjsmin‘s DIY-rooted approach to experimental electronics: one built on exchange, shared stages, and the passing of musical experience between people and thus new perspectives from friends and collaborators. The contributors range widely: Mindsight offers a glistening post-bass indepted excursion; fellow Münchnerin Emilia Haar and Bayreuth‘s Obso Order contribute sombre, self-reflective work; Claus Filser (tourmate and live collaborator on double bass) brings something closer to naturalistic observation, just like Gloria de Oliveira (founder of La Double Vie) with her spectral reimagining built from poetry, layered vocal harmonies and field recordings. At the far end of the range: THEM//ELDER‘s dramatic widescreen rework, the sensual noise bursts of Munich‘s Rumpeln, and Harey‘s Summerland remix, a muted, lo-fi dub that handles the original‘s emotionally charged piano chords with studied casualness. Where last year’s Büro of Music signalled a new self-confidence, wit where there had been weight, Vakuum takes the opposite direction: a sharpened emotional focus, closer in sensibility to the debut LP Wind bei Nacht. These two releases prove the artist’s versatility: not two consecutive phases so much as two simultaneously held registers.
