Continuing Stage Door's series of cast album reissues presented in Digitally Extracted Stereo comes the My Fair Lady Original Broadway Cast Recording. Newly mixed by Ted Carfrae, the release gives listeners their first opportunity to experience this originally mono-only album in full stereo. Fittingly, the restoration arrives in the very month the musical celebrates the 70th anniversary of its Broadway opening. When My Fair Lady opened at the Mark Hellinger Theatre on March 15, 1956, it quickly proved to be a landmark in musical theatre. Lyricist and librettist Alan Jay Lerner and composer Frederick Loewe adapted Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw, a work long deemed “unmusical” because of its talkative structure and ambiguous ending. Earlier efforts had failed, but Lerner and Loewe discovered that the story of Professor Henry Higgins and Cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle could flourish through song while preserving Shaw’s wit and social commentary. Inspired casting fueled the show’s success. Rex Harrison brought a conversational “talk-singing” style to Higgins, notably in “Why Can’t the English?” and “I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face,” while Julie Andrews delivered a radiant Eliza, making “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly,” “The Rain in Spain,” and “I Could Have Danced All Night” instant classics. Directed by Moss Hart with elegant designs by Cecil Beaton, the production dazzled audiences and ran a record-breaking 2,717 performances. The Original Broadway Cast Recording, released by Columbia Records in 1956, played a crucial role in cementing the show’s legacy. The album became a bestseller, introducing songs such as “On the Street Where You Live” and “Get Me to the Church on Time” to millions who had never set foot on Broadway. For many, the cast recording was not merely a souvenir but the primary way of encountering the show, helping to establish My Fair Lady as a cornerstone of the golden age of musical theatre. Although My Fair Lady was re-recorded in stereo in 1959 with the Original London Cast, many of whom had originated their roles on Broadway, many listeners still regard the original mono Broadway recording as the definitive version. Now, through the work of noted engineer and producer Ted Carfrae, the Original Broadway Cast Recording can at last be heard in Digitally Extracted Stereo sound for the first time, revealing new depth, clarity, and presence in this historic performance.
