Ashé Mystics is a collaboration established as a means of developing new possibilities of expression by exploring the integration of electronics to traditional rhythms. Ashé Mystics are: Joshua Marquez - guitarist, multi-instrumentalist, composer, improviser, and sound artist Julius Masri - composer and multi-instrumentalist with a primary focus on drumset, Kevin Diehl - electro-acoustic drummer, percussionist, composer, producer, Santeria priest and Olu Bata (keeper of the sacred drums) These three artists are fusing their treasured individual artistic concepts, explorations, and languages, and play off of each others’ energies, synthesizing new possibilities extending beyond established intellectual constructs. Ashé Mystics is a collaboration originally initiated by Kevin Diehl to extend the connection to the ancestors, from whom truth and strength are received by way of ritual. Ashé is a Yoruba word with multiple meanings; the principle definitions being the power that manifests in all objects and events, as well as the power that causes change. This is power that is manifested in the ritual of words, visual art, and music. It is a power that runs through the breath of the living as well as in the living force of the ancestors.
