The Broadcast Collection 1976 - 1983

The performance on CD 2 was recorded live at the Automatt Studio in San Francisco with no audience. It was supposed to be broadcast via the King Biscuit Flower Hour network, but, due to legal problems, it never aired. The only song from this session which was officially released is "Good Times" (a Sam Cooke cover), which appeared on the “Time³” box set. This live performance features early Journey originals/classics along with several covers of classic soul and rock songs : “Road Runner” (Jr. Walker & The All Stars) “Love Hurts” (Everly Brothers, popularized by Nazareth) “Hold On, I'm Coming” (Sam & Dave) “People Get Ready” (The Impressions) “Show Me” (Joe Tex) “Crossroads” (Robert Johnson) “Born Under A Bad Sign” (Booker T. & The Mg’s Cover, popularized by Albert King) “Good Times” (Sam Cooke) For this “Super Jam II”, Journey (Gregg Rollie on keyboards, Neal Schon on guitar, Ross Valory on bass and Steve Smith on drums) was the main band performing all the songs joined by several guests including the Tower of Power horn section, Annie Sampson and Jo Baker from the band Stoneground as well as Tom Johnston (original Doobie Brothers songwriter, singer, and guitarist) who’s trading solos with Neal Schon and sang lead vocals on "Show Me" and "Crossroads". When he's a not lead singing, Steve Perry add some backing vocals harmonies from one sinbg to another. He also recorded some comments which have been added between each song. Tracks 13 to 16 have been recorded live (with an audience) on July 9th, 1978 at Aragon Ballroom, Chicago, Illinois. The “blues jam” includes the following guests: harmonist Jerry Portnoy (Muddy Waters, Eric Clapton), pianist Pinetop Perkins, guitarists Albert King and Luther Allison. Ansley Dunbar was still the drummer of the band at the time. This concert was filmed for the "Soundstage" WTTW show.
