A new Kaisers disc outing is a red letter day in many a popular music aficionado’s calendar and with the passing of a not insignificant 246 months since their last long player, this latest release date will doubtless be marked with a particularly vivid shade of crimson. For younger listeners less familiar with the group, the Kaisers came to prominence in the early 1990s as the UK’s foremost exponents of the Rock ‘n Twist idiom, often referred to as the Hamburg Sound. Having performed in Hamburg but once, such a title may be less than appropriate, but it is abundantly clear where the group’s musical loyalties lie. Groups such as the Big Three, King Size Taylor & the Dominos and the Undertakers undoubtedly still have a hand in steering the musical path chosen by the Kaisers and happy though they may be to acknowledge the influence of the aforementioned artists, the furrow of beat that they plough has become very much their own. The group’s return to the disc scene is due in no small part to the organisers of Valencia’s Surforama Festival who, back in the mists of 2015, persuaded the “boys” to return to the stage. Since then they have made appearances at many events across Europe to such acclaim that the decision was made to once again enter the recording studio. “We can’t keep bashing out the same stuff at all these festivals” they say, with customary pragmatism. Faced with the task of producing a new LP after such a considerable absence from the pop pickers’ bustling marketplace, the group decided to dispense with the convention of returning to the recording fray with a selection of numbers that are OK-but-not-as-good-as-the-old-ones.
