Liner Notes [A letter to Heather Harrington, mixed with a middle eight as a commentary on the times]: James Rubinstein
Liner Notes [A poem for Pippa Driscoll set to music]: James Rubinstein
Liner Notes [An early recording of a song into which "Ooo" had been woven that later appeared on the first Byzantium album - Byzantium 1972. It features the first Byzantium line-up, although it hadn't been christened with that name yet]: James Rubinstein
Liner Notes [Came between Ora and Byzantium, was for Pippa Driscoll whilst she was in India, she did" ... see a wife for me, " we're still together after fifty years]: James Rubinstein
Liner Notes [For those of you who are familiar with the Byzantium archive, all these songs were recorded in the same way as the live side of our now legendary (so they tell us) Black & White album which was released in 1974. That is to say, these are all PA mixes recorded directly onto a Revox off the back of our Midas mixer. As such, the mix off the desk was not designed for tape, it was designed to supplement the sound that was coming off the stage for the benefit of the punters. As a result, it takes a while to adjust to the balance. The vocals are very up front and Mick's guitar, which would have been belting off the stage, is often not as far forward as we would like. That said, this is the real thing. No fudging, no fiddling, but live - just as it happened - warts and all (tracks: 1-9)]: James Rubinstein
Liner Notes [I love this song. Chloe Walters is one of the most truly original writers and genuinely gifted musicians I have ever come across. Robin - rhythm section]: James Rubinstein
Liner Notes [It was recorded three times in all, and this, the first, still sounds the best to me]: James Rubinstein
Liner Notes [Jon struts his stuff]: James Rubinstein
Liner Notes [Little gem written by Mick, recorded in the same series of sessions that produced "Thank God" and "This Time I Won't Let You Go" when I was working very closely with Mick before we joined up (rejoined in my case) with Byzantium. Mick sings, we both pick and strum]: James Rubinstein
Liner Notes [Love song to Pippa Driscoll whilst she travelled overland to India '72-'73]: James Rubinstein
Liner Notes [Malcom Haines took me to see Dave Brubeck something must have rubbed off!]: James Rubinstein
Liner Notes [One for Beverly Baxter, who also sings background. Robin's piano at the end]: James Rubinstein
Liner Notes [One of a number of songs written on Shippen Rock in Hope Cove - and if you'd been there, you would have seen why]: James Rubinstein
Liner Notes [One of a series of themes Robin and I worked up as possible backgrounds for TV ads]: James Rubinstein
Liner Notes [One of the first songs I ever wrote. This was for Dany Fedida. It was subsequently recorded by Byzantium on their first A&M album]: James Rubinstein
Liner Notes [One of the titles that got left off the original album - Ora 1969. I can remember writing the lyric during a particularly boring school lesson]: James Rubinstein
Liner Notes [Robin and I did a complete reworking of this old chestnut in some down time at Tangerine Studios]: James Rubinstein
Liner Notes [Robin and I rework an out-take from the KPM sessions. Robin on guitar]: James Rubinstein
Liner Notes [Seafaring, and an ode to a frightening journey across Lyme Bay in the worst gale I ever encountered]: James Rubinstein
Liner Notes [The melody still holds up for me, as do most of the lyrics]: James Rubinstein
Liner Notes [The original recording of the opening track on the first Byzantium album]: James Rubinstein
Liner Notes [These Tangerine sessions were the last studio recordings made by the band. It was our last fling of the dice but Atlantic Records, who commissioned them, turned us down, and we played our last gig at the Roundhouse (the same venue as the band's very first performance) a month or so later]: James Rubinstein
Liner Notes [This should have been called "Beverly, but somehow it sounded wrong when sung in context, and so I changed it to Deborah, which was the name of her sister. I hadn't told Beverly this until putting these notes together! Oboe and violin were provided by Gordon and Jennie Hunt - no relation - respectively. Gordon has latterly become a renowned orchestral player]: James Rubinstein
Liner Notes [This version from the first KPM session was the best]: James Rubinstein
Liner Notes [This was for Beverly Baxter, give or take a bit of poetic license]: James Rubinstein
Liner Notes [This was for Carole Hindmarch. Julian extracts extraordinary quasi-sitar sounds from his legendary "Duffy"]: James Rubinstein
Liner Notes [Venetia Stanley-Smith used to sing with Beverly in Sweet Dreams]: James Rubinstein

Примечания

Five CD box set, "...assembled with the help and approval of the band, Halfway Dreaming: Anthology 1969-75 is the first-ever Byzantium compilation. It includes all three albums that were released at the time, together with a further set of 1974/75-era live material, various studio out-takes and, as a considerable bonus, an extended version of the Ora album." "Evolving from the line-up that had recorded the highly-regarded Ora LP in 1969, Byzantium recorded two early Seventies albums – ‘Byzantium’ and ‘Seasons Changing," both featuring future Ian Dury and Chaz Jankel – for the A&M label. After leaving A&M, the band self-financed the 1974 ‘Live/Studio’ album in an effort to attract new representation before splitting the following year. Although they received relatively little attention from the music industry at the time, Byzantium’s progressive rock-based combination of musical eclecticism, strong harmonies, and timeless song writing have belatedly attracted an audience, with collectors now paying significant sums to acquire original vinyl pressings of their recordings. Assembled with the help and approval of the band, Halfway Dreaming: Anthology 1969-75 is the first-ever Byzantium compilation. It includes all three albums that were released at the time, together with a further set of 1974/75-era live material, various studio out-takes and, as a considerable bonus, an extended version of the Ora album. Housed in a stylish clamshell box, this essential 5-CD package features a lavish 32-page booklet containing a new 4000 word essay on the band and numerous previously unpublished photos. It’s the definitive document of a band who fell through the cracks at the time but have subsequently come to be regarded by many as an integral part of the early Seventies British underground scene.
