ESP marks a distinct period in the development of Super Hit; the solo musical endeavor of young Hayden Waggener. Moving forward from the past comforts of reverb-washed synthesis and into the world of live instrumentation, the record contains an uncurbed energy. Humorous passages clash with moments of abrupt stoicism, running the gamut of emotions from lighthearted to deeply contemplative, proud, paranoid, joyful, mournful; conveyed with few words through the melodic themes, rhythms and sonic terrain. "I made this record at home, crammed underneath my bedframe. At night I nest above my instruments with ringing ears. In my deep dreams a benevolent being appears, assuming different forms; an animal, a landscape, a friend; and communicates through odd looks, winks, and gestures. Questioning, stimulating, and affirming. If you're tooned in right, this record can play the same role for you..." The music is elevated through the performances of close friend and cellist Jude Tedaldi, whose playing brings a sweetness and warmth to the arrangements, a comforting voice in an unknown territory. With vocals omitted, texture and harmonic relationships between instruments take precedence, and the sounds tell the story in their own language.
