Arcade And Attica Railroad Souvenir Record When the Arcade & Attica Railroad purchased it's first diesel engine in 1941, the end of an era on the picturesque western New York shortline, appeared to be conclusive with the retirement of the road's vintage steam locomotive. The diesel continued to move freight over the railroad in a manner typical of dozens of similar lines across the country, but to many, the loss of the charm and excitement created by a steam locomotive was simply irreplaceable. During the summer of 1962, progress was set back a number of years (or forward, depending upon your point of view) when the railroad purchased another steam locomotive, embarking upon another steam passenger excursion service between Arcade and the hamlet of Curriers. This revival of the steam locomotive has brought joy to thousands of eager passengers in the ensuing years. Now, listen to the unique sound of steam on the Arcade & Attica Railroad, featuring not one, but two different locomotives, Numbers 14 and 18. 'Board! Side One Track one: Number 18, a 2-8-0, leaves the engine house in Arcade while Number 14 whistles a salute in the background. Track two: Number 18, build in 1920 by the American Locomotive Company, has picked up her six car train and is now heard crossing a trestle, then snaking around a sharp curve, just north of the Arcade Depot. Track three: 4-6-0, Number 14, a 1917 Baldwin product, highballs the "varnish" over a highway crossing near Arcade Center. Track four: "Mainline action!" While Number 14 switches her train at the Arcade Depot on the Borden Company siding, Number 18 highballs down the main track with a board of directors special. Just as soon as Extra 18 clears, the "Arcadian" begins its journey to yesteryear. Track five: And at a point just south of Curriers, the engineer lays a heavy hand on the whistle cord at a busy grade crossing.
