Earliest label variant of the 1969 UK first issue. The “Engineer: David Hunt” credit is a printing error on the first batch of labels. Shortly after release, Pye corrected the label and added the full list of six engineers. Both label variants share identical stamped matrices (NSPL 18272 A-1 *T / B-1 *T) and the same laminated flipback sleeve. All subsequent vinyl and CD reissues reproduce the corrected six-engineer credit, never the misprinted one-engineer label, confirming this variant as the earliest and rarest. ✅ VARIANT A — “Engineer: David Hunt” (1 engineer) • This is the earliest pressing. • It is a label printing error. • It is the rarest variant. • Matrices: NSPL 18272 A-1 T / B-1 T (same on all 1969 variants). • Sleeve: fully laminated flipback, identical to the corrected variant. • Notes for Discogs: clarify that this variant exists only due to an early label misprint on the first batch of 1969 labels. ⸻ ✅ VARIANT B — “Engineers: 6 names” (corrected label) • This is the second variant, corrected. • Same year: 1969. • Same matrices as Variant A (A-1 T / B-1 T). • This is the version Pye considered “correct” and the basis for all later reissues. • Notes for Discogs: explicitly state that this is not a later pressing; it is a corrected label printed during the same 1969 run, following the misprinted first batch. ⸻ ✅ VARIANT C — Early repress without flipback (≈1970) • Third identifiable version, issued slightly later as an early repress. • Sleeve: NOT flipback — non-flipback laminated or semi-laminated sleeve. • Matrices: often hand-etched (not stamped) but still based on A-1 / B-1 metalwork. • Label: uses the corrected 6-engineer credit, same label artwork as Variant B. • Year: circa 1970, not 1969. • This is an early UK repress, distinguishable by the non-flipback sleeve and etched runouts, but not a modern reissue.
