For background, here is text from an email promoting the recording: "Over the past year, I’ve really honed my piano chops working at that church, hence, this very personal and perhaps odd collection of tunes. Regarding the title track, “None but the Lonely Heart” (music by Tschaikowsky, lyrics by Goethe), I found the sheet music in the church basement. I learned it and loved it. Then later, as I sifted through my deceased mother’s sheet music from the 1930s and 40s, I found her copy of “None but the Lonely Heart”! That’s her’s pictured on the album cover, with her name written at the top. It is very moving to me to imagine my mother as a teenager in the 1940s, sitting at the piano playing that piece. Also included is a Duke Ellington hymn, “Come Sunday”. Mostly, I have to believe what I sing, so on this one, I altered the straightforward religious view in Duke’s lyrics. The story “Yonder the Yinder” is from Carl Sandburg’s Rootabaga Stories/Potato Face edition. Rare by anyone’s standards. Plus songs from The Smiths, Grieg, Patti Smith, and more." On "Redondo Beach" credits for "band" are given to "Griner/Rapinac/Boucher".
