As a teenager I heard Danny sing in Frank Traynor's tiny smoke-filled club, and many years later was intrigued when I met him at Melbourne University, singing and teaching English and History so that it moved the most hardened wordsharp and ideologue. I watched him enthuse people about his tradition. Later, as his mate and offsider I, like others in the audience, was moved by its compassion and humanity. His strong voice has filled concert halls and lecture theatres around Australia, and has boomed across open air spaces - even conjured up a storm singing shanties on the wharf at Port Fairy. Here we can experience gentler tones as he reveals men who are sentimental and loving.
